Suicide Risk Assessment and Prevention Trainings

I provide suicide risk assessment and prevention trainings for school counsellors, pastoral care professionals, teachers, parent communities, and students that are tailored to the age group and professional level of attendees.

I have trained in suicide risk assessment since 2007 have held certification through the QPR Institute in the U.S. as an instructor for their evidence-based suicide prevention programs since 2014. The QPR Gatekeeper Training for Suicide Prevention is one of the few suicide prevention programs listed in the National Registry of Evidence-based Practices and Policies by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) the U.S.

After completing training, participants will have:

  • Increased knowledge about suicide and its warning signs

  • Increased recognition of sources of stress that bring about suicidal crises

  • Increased awareness of different types of suicidal communications

  • Increased confidence and competence in helping a suicidal person

  • Increased ability to intervene appropriately in a suicidal crisis

Why is suicide prevention training important?

While youth suicide is a growing global concern, surveys show that most school professionals have not received formal suicide prevention training. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, QPR training could reduce the number of youth suicides by 13%.

Crisis & Bereavement Policy Consultations

Schools are often synonymous with youth and vibrancy. We have many guidelines on how to support children's lives at school. But when a crisis or death occurs - whether the person involved is  a student, a member of staff, a parent, or another member of the school community - we can be left at a loss for what to do.

These types of events can be overwhelming for students, staff, and parents alike and require timely and coordinated action on a number of levels. Having a clear and comprehensive Crisis & Bereavement Policy ensures that your school's response to a critical incident is cohesive, sensitive to the needs of your community, and consistent with your school's values.

I can help. Using over five years of experience working with a variety of international schools and families after a critical incident or death, I consult with school administrations on how to construct or improve their Crisis & Bereavement Policy based on research recommendations and first-hand experience of what works.
